He was in charge of six trainee officers, was told that 5 were very reliable, 6th not: that was Dreyfus. When he had to submit a report at the end of the training, he wrote: very intelligent officer but did not fully satisfy from the point of view of character and conscientiousness for an officer required to be used at the General Staff.
