Object DescriptionSiddur [prayer book] given to David Pollak as a gift by a Hungarian prisoner in the last camp (can't remember name) he was in, Germany, April/May 1945, near end of war. The siddur has daily, Sabbath and holiday prayers, as well as the Passover Haggadah and the entire book of Psalms. Several of the first and last pages are missing. One loose page has part of the ritual of putting on tefillin in the morning, another has laws of prayer. A loose page at the end relates to the laws of prayer throughout the year. Binding is beige cloth. Donor's name is written in pencil inside the front cover [opens from right side] and in ink inside the back cover, with the word in Hungarian that means to remember. Inside the first page there are personal names and Hungarian place names written in pencil, perhaps friends of the original owner of the siddur. Donor said that the owner of the siddur offered it to him because the owner thought donor might not survive due to his serious injury and infection. The owner thought he would survive to obtain another siddur. Donor was happy to have it. The siddur is obviously much used; binding and pages show signs of a lot of wear, with particular wear on the pages of the Sabbath morning prayers. Before page 211 is a chart showing the appearance of the new moon for the years 1938 and 1939. After page 576 the book of Psalms is bound in, with new pagination. The title page of Psalms indicates publication in Przemysl, Poland, date obscure.Collections
