NotesBerek Ambaras, b. 1893 in Garwolin, Poland, married Ruchla Leja Spektor (b. Warsaw c. 1896), in Warsaw in 1926. They had two children, Samuel, b. and Chaja, b.1929 in Warsaw. Berek was active in the Bund in Warsaw, secretary of the leather workers branch. The family left Warsaw during the first year of German occupation, getting to Vilna. They obtained visas from Sugihara, possibly with the help of relatives in Moscow, and then crossed the Soviet Union on the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Vladivostok, by boat to Japan. They lived in Kobe for about a year, until they were expelled with other Jewish refugees, to Shanghai. They lived in Shanghai until 1948, when they came to NY via San Francisco, arriving Feb. 2, 1949. Officially, they were supposed to be emigrating to Italy, but with the help of the Bund in NY the family remained in the USA. In NY Berek, now known as Berl, worked in a shop and was active in the Bund and the National Executive of the Workmen’s Circle. He died 1978-03-06 in NYC
