NotesJacob Koppel Javits (1904-1986) Jewish, Republican. Member US House of Representatives, 21st N.Y. District (Manhattan) 1946-1954; New York State Attorney General 1955-1956; US Senator from New York 1956-1980. Failed to gain the Republican nomination for Vice President in 1968 but was the first Jew to attempt to do so.
