NotesAbraham David (Abe) Beame (1906-2001) was the first Jewish mayor of New York City. Before being elected to office, he served on many city and state committees and commissions. He was elected comptroller in 1961 and 1969. In 1967 he was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention. He won the Democratic nomination for mayor in the primary in 1965 but was defeated in the general election. In 1973 he won a landslide victory for mayor, which included 63% of the Jewish vote and 68% of the African American vote. Beame was succeeded in 1978 by Ed Koch.
