Object DescriptionShears used by Dave (Tevye) Poretz. The heavy pair of shears was probably once lacquered on the handles. The two pieces are attached by one screw. No information as to whether the shears were brought by Poretz to US or purchased by him in America. But he certainly used them here c.1920s in his work as an operator in the garment industry.

NotesTevye (later Dave) Poretz, father of the donor, was born in Eishyshok on April 22, 1893 and arrived in New York on February 25, 1913. (see interesting story in donor file) He worked as a sewing machine operator. He briefly owned a coat store until the stock market crash. The rest of his life he worked as an operator. Shortly after his arrival he sent for Anna Lubetsky. They married and had four children. They originally lived on the Lower East Side, then the Bronx and eventually Brighton Beach.
