NotesA bomb hit the Nagel family home on September 1, 1939, the day of the German invasion of Poland. Donor fled to Bialystok, then Warsaw, then to Shavl, where a very receptive Jewish community took him in. As a foreigner, he could not work legally, but worked secretly as an electrician for ten months, until the Russians occupied Siauliai (Shavl) and he was granted a work permit. From there he was brought to the Vilna ghetto, which he eventually escaped, returning to Shavl.
