Object DescriptionMax Nagel standing in front of his house near water pump.NotesA bomb hit the Nagel family home on September 1, 1939, the day of the German invasion of Poland. Donor fled to Bialystok, then Warsaw, then to Shavl, where a very receptive Jewish community took him in. As a foreigner, he could not work legally, but worked secretly as an electrician for ten months, until the Russians occupied Siauliai (Shavl) and he was granted a work permit. From there he was brought to the Vilna ghetto, which he eventually escaped, returning to Shavl.
