Object DescriptionRound silver plate handshaped with repoussé, martelé, engraving and scratchwork. In the center is the word "Passover," with a large leaf, flanked by a grape cluster, above and below the word. A raised rim surrounds this area. Several figures surround encircle this. They include, starting directly above the word, going clockwise: Aaron and Moses, holding his staff as it changes into a snake, in front of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, Moses in Egyptian garb killing the Egyptian guard, and a maidservant holding up baby Moses in his basket to the daughter of Pharaoh. Pyramids, palm trees and clouds are seen in the background, throughout. This entire section is in a shallow bowl. The rim of the bowl consists of six oval, hammered out spaces for the ceremonial foods. These are interspersed with three sets of two birds, a pouncing lion, a growling tiger, on hind legs, and a stag. These could possibly refer to some of the tribes of Israel, or personifications of attributes given to Israel as a whole. The edge of the plate is finished like a piecrust. It is signed on the back Sigal, Sterling 1958.Collections
